Conques
An important stop on the Camino de Santiago, Conques is a preserved site nestled in a wilderness setting.
Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have flocked to this unique site not only to admire the natural beauty but also to venerate the relics of Sainte Foy, now housed in the famous abbey's treasury. The monastery thus became one of the most powerful in medieval Christianity.
It was Prosper Mérimée who rediscovered and rescued, in the 19th century, the Sainte-Foy abbey church, a remarkable example of Romanesque genius, both architecturally and sculpturally, as evidenced by its carved tympanum depicting the Last Judgment.
Since 1994, the abbey church has been further illuminated by contemporary stained glass windows designed by the painter Pierre Soulages.
Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Conques can pride itself on having preserved the character of its medieval streets and squares.
The surroundings
Within an hour's drive: vineyards (Marcillac), castles (Bournazel and Belcastel), museums (Soulages Museum in Rodez), picturesque villages, and breathtaking landscapes.
